#30DaysofMoney from Forbes

Towards the end of February, I decided that I had some pretty expensive dreams ahead of me, and it was time to take my savings account up a notch. I set a pretty hefty monthly savings goal for myself for the remainder of 2016, and decided that in March I was going to kick it into high gear. Lucky for me, on March 1st Forbes, who I follow on twitter, started a 30 Days of Money challenge.

The first thing on my list of goals is a new car. I still have the first car I ever bought, a 2004 Cavalier that I purchased in 2010. It hit me a while back that my car is over ten years old now, and I've had it for over five years. When I first bought this car, I set that arbitrary goal to have a new car after 5 years. Of course, that was when I thought it would only take me four years to finish college and get a big girl job. Things change.

I had been thinking about buying a car for a while a few months ago, and I was close to starting the purchase cycle. However, an opportunity came up for me to look after my sister's car while she will be out of the country for a year. In a few months, it will be kind of like I have a new car. Well, new to me, and much newer than the car that I am currently driving. This gives me a year and some change to continue building up my savings account for a big down payment on a new car. Easy, peasy. But... I have other big expenses coming my way as well.

Next on the list, a big move. I've never hidden the fact that although I wanted to come back to St. Louis to get myself started, I also want to move elsewhere and experience life in another place. St. Louis is a great city - I mean come on, we have Imo's pizza, toasted ravioli, and gooey butter cake. But is it worth it to stay in a city for the food? Nah, especially now that I've been watching what I eat. Also, people in my field tend to move around pretty frequently.

When I was younger, I wanted to move to a big city, New York or Chicago. I figured Chicago was closer to home, a little smaller, and a good place to start out, so I set that as my goal. But towards the end of my time in school, when I started actually looking at jobs and trying to see myself living somewhere, I realized I had changed. Although I like being close to a city, I prefer living in a suburban setting. This is possible around Chicago, but I just wasn't feeling it very much anymore. I put the idea of moving on the back burner, and decided to just focus on the "now" and find a job in St. Louis.

Now, I have a job, and apartment, and a boyfriend in St. Louis. My whole family is here, minus a few out-of-towners. But I have started to feel the pull for something new. Then, about two months ago, Jim went on a business trip to Phoenix and Denver. He mentioned how awesome it was to sit in that Denver office with the mountains right outside of the window. I mentioned how I have only been to Colorado a handful of times, but I absolutely loved it. And we both just kind of said at the same time, "Why don't we move there?"

Denver will be perfect for me. I can live close to a city and close to tons of outdoor activities that I actually love. Plus - there's no way my parents wouldn't visit me there. However, the cost of living in Denver (and all of Colorado) is much higher than it is here around St. Louis. Renting an apartment is even more expensive than buying a house. So... You guessed it, we're working on saving up for a house.

Don't freak out just yet. I'm a smart girl. Right now, Jim and I don't live together, so there is no way that I would say, "Let's buy a house together, and that will be the first time that we live together, and everything will be awesome and work out because obviously!" No way. Denver relies on a number of things, and it's on the 2-3 year plan, not immediate.

First, Jim and I need to move in together in an apartment and not hate each other. This is more difficult than you would think, since we both value our alone time so much. The good news is, this will help both of us save a ton of money. The bills will be cut in half, and we can motivate each other to stop spending on things like going out to eat all the time. The plan is to move in together after both of our leases are up.

Next up, we both need to get more experience in our fields and find not just a job, but a better job, in the Denver area. This shouldn't be too difficult for either of us. In fact, Jim has already started talking to his boss about transferring to that beautiful Denver office. The problem with where I work, is that the next level up for my career path doesn't allow me to transfer with my current company. At least not to Denver. There is an office in Grand Junction, Colorado that I could transfer to, but that isn't ideal. Honestly, I'm more excited about the prospect of finding a new company, and with one of us having a ~hopefully~ secured job, we should be okay for a while. That is, as long as I build up my savings correctly.

And last, we're going to need to find a place to live in Denver. Chances are, we will probably start out renting, even though it is more expensive. We'll look for something with a short lease, and start looking for a house right away. We have talked about our must-haves and what we think a realistic budget would be. Not surprising to me, it all matched up. I guess we won't hate each other when we move in together too much after all.

I have another long term goal in mind as well, which will also require quite a chunk of change, but we're keeping that one a secret for now. :)

Now that I've written a novel, let's get to the matter at hand. As I said earlier, Forbes came out with this #30DaysofMoney Challenge right in the nick of time. It's mostly written in a way that is geared towards millennials, like myself, but I think it's an approachable challenge for anyone who wants to take a closer look at their money. This challenge was great because it forced me to think about a lot of things that people tend to avoid.

On day two, we did something that was pretty important for me. We looked at spending trackers. I'm the type of person who hasn't ever set a concrete budget, but with my savings goals, I decided it was necessary. I choose to use GoodBudget. I liked this option because I wanted something where I could set limits for myself instead of just analyzing what I'm spending. I also liked that it was an option that I could opt out of linking to my bank account. I feel much more secure, and I get a closer look at what is actually going on with my money if I'm the one manually entering it. I learned a lot after using GoodBudget for a month. Mainly, that I had no idea how much I normally spent on things that I don't need. Overall, this was the biggest fix for my money situation over this past month.

GoodBudget is a free tool that can help get your budget under control. Try it out!
Another thing that I loved, which helped me to stop spending unnecessarily were the $10 Tuesdays and Walletless Wednesday. I rarely spend more than $10 on any given weekday, but I have been known to make unnecessary trips to the grocery store. I actually tried to extend Walletless Wednesday through the better part of my week, and decided to just eat the food I had at home. It was there anyway!

There were also fun quizzes on day four, day seventeen, and day twenty-five that are eye-opening ways to learn more about yourself. By filling out these quizzes, you'll learn what makes you spend, how you value money, and how you value your time. Don't forget: time equals money!

Another quick and easy thing that I plan on incorporating into my life is the challenge from day 21: Tax Your Weekend Spending. I absolutely loved this because even though I have my spending mostly under control during the week, on the weekend there are so many opportunities for going out with friends, going shopping, or ordering pizza, which had been my Sunday ritual before this challenge... All of these things are good to do in moderation, but they can get out of hand really quickly. One way to keep it in check is by taking half of what you spend every weekend, and putting it into your savings account. Not only are you trying to spend less, but it also helps you save more!

Now that you've read more than was ever necessary about my financial goals and the fun I had with the Forbes #30DaysofMoney challenge, I challenge you to participate in it too. Sure, it's not the same when they're not surprising you with a new article every day and you're not playing along with everyone else. But - if you want to get your financial life in order, now is the time.

Yoga Milestone: Forearm Stand

This weekend I crossed a pose off of my list of yoga goals. Finally I am able to hold Pincha Mayurasana, or for those of us who don't speak in yoga terms, a forearm stand. This is a pose that has been on my goal list since I started consistently doing yoga two and a half years ago. However, I only started consciously working on this pose at the beginning of this year, two and a half months ago.

When I first started out doing yoga, I wanted to conquer all of the cool looking poses, but this is one that, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't accomplish without a wall. Eventually, I just stopped trying on this pose, and it fell off of my to-do list.

This time around, I decided to skip the wall. I got my first headstand by just kicking up, and I figured I could do the same for a forearm stand. I was right. It may have taken me longer to learn it because I didn't use a wall, but I prefer it that way. In my opinion, a wall provides too much support, makes you too comfortable. When you don't use a wall, you are forced to learn your balance. Either that, or you fall. Even I spent the time building strength in my shoulders using a wall, when it came time to kick up, I would still have had to relearn my balance.

I think the biggest challenge in learning the forearm stand was learning the upper body posture. To build the strength in your shoulders to support your whole body, you first have to get comfortable Ardha Pincha Mayurasana, dolphin pose. For me, there was a level of flexibility that my body had to learn in that pose as well. Initially, I felt uncomfortable with my shoulders at that angle. I was so used to having my head to help support my torso that craning my neck felt unnatural. I think that skipping dolphin pose the first time I tried to learn this pose is why I was unable to accomplish a forearm stand then. I grew to really love dolphin pose, and I especially loved doing the variation above with my yoga wheel.

Now that I've built the strength in my shoulders, it's all about finding my balance as my feet leave the ground. For the past few weeks, I have been able to kick up and hold for a brief second before falling. I still can't hold the pose for very long, but I can officially hold it for a very wobbly four seconds. I still can't hold the pose every time that I try it, but! I have held the pose, so in my book this goal has been accomplished.

Even though I can now "hold" the pose, I still have a lot of work to do. Now my practice will consist of getting comfortable enough to hold for multiple breaths, straightening my legs, and playing with other variations. I can't wait to see what my progress will look like over the next two and a half months.

Countdown to Vacation: 20 Days!

In case you weren't aware, in 20 days, I will be laying on a beach. Jim and I started planning this trip to Mexico all the way back last July. Of course, at that point we didn't know where we were going to go, or who would be able to go with us. But we knew a few things: beach, booze, and tons of friends.

Jim and a few of his guy friends have been going on trips like this for a few years, but last year they didn't get to take one. So this year, we wanted to get as many people as we could to go. Originally, we had 16 - 20 people interested in going.

You can imagine how hard it was to plan anything with a group that big. Picking a date range alone was tough, especially since we wanted to go in spring, but avoid most of the spring breakers. Budgets varied widely, but we settled on price ranges that would work for everyone. Then the planning got really difficult. Different things were important to different people. Some people wanted to go to Costa Rica or Panama while others wanted to go with the familiar Mexico. Some people wanted to go to a place with less families and more nightlife. Some people were more interested in the quality of the beach, but others were more interested in what food options were available. The list goes on and on..

Eventually, we decided on a beautiful resort in Cancun, Mexico. We'll be going to Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun. It looks like a beautiful resort, and it's rated 4.5/5 stars on TripAdvisor. One of the couples that was planning on going with us had actually been to this resort before, and they loved it. Sold.

Like with most things in life, the unexpected came up, and our group of 16 - 20 has been cut down to 10. A few couples couldn't find babysitters, and another just got pregnant and can't go thanks to the Zika virus. Ten is still a pretty good number, and we are super excited to have so many awesome friends to come with us! We even get to meet up with some of our friends who live a few states away.

This is going to be my first "real vacation" that I am paying for with my own adult money. It'll also be my first experience at an all-inclusive resort. I absolutely cannot wait to spend time on the beach, and you can expect tons of beach yoga pictures. Our days will be spent lounging on the beach and at the pool, day drinking with our friends. It looks like there are some great restaurant options for dinner. There is a surprising variety, with lots to try! The rooms all look beautiful too, which will be perfect for spending the evenings with my Jim.

Obviously, I am beyond excited for this trip! It has been in the works for months, and I am way overdue for a vacation. The countdown began a long time ago, but I feel like 20 days is an appropriate amount of time to start gushing.

Recipe: Pizza-dilla

If you know anything about me, you know that I live on pizza and quesadillas. I could honestly only eat those two things for the rest of my life and never get tired of them. Unfortunately, I decided a few months ago that I had to start cutting back and eating a more diverse diet. Paying attention to what I eat has helped me lose quite a bit of weight, but the truth is, I still eat pizza once a week and quesadillas at least twice per week.

Because of my undying love for both of these foods, it's sometimes hard for me to chose between the two. Combining them into one was bound to happen at some point.

This past Christmas, I got Jim a mountain pie iron for Christmas, and we've been making pizza sandwiches on our camping trips. I always come home with some leftover pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and pizza sauce, and my kitchen is always well stocked with green peppers, crushed red peppers, and tortillas. Thus, the pizza-dilla.

These are super easy to make, and the options are endless as far as ingredients. You can make them match whatever type of pizza is your favorite. I'm obsessed with pepperoni and green pepper pizzas with lots of crushed red pepper flakes on top, so that's how I choose to make my pizza-dillas. I highly recommend giving them a try.

Ingredients (makes one Pizza-dilla):

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 6-inch flour tortillas
  • 2-3 tbsp pizza sauce, depending on how much sauce you like. I like less sauce in mine.
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese (or for us St. Louisans, use provel if you're craving Imo's)
  • As many pepperoni slices as you would like. I use 5 to keep my calories down.
  • Chopped green pepper
  • Crushed red pepper flakes to taste

Directions:
  1. Coat small non-stick pan with olive oil, but do not turn on heat yet. I build my quesadillas in the pan before turning on the heat. I like to set one tortilla in the olive oil, then remove it and set aside on a plate. This will become the top of the pizza-dilla. Then I take the second tortilla and set it into the remaining olive oil in the pan. This turns into the base for building the pizza-dilla.
  2. Spoon the desired amount of sauce onto the base tortilla, and spread to the edges with the back of the spoon.
  3. Spinkle on half of the cheese.
  4. Add your desired toppings. For mine, I like to put on the crushed red peppers at this point, to make sure they are evenly distributed. Then, I add my chopped green peppers all over. Finally, I top with about five pepperoni slices.
  5. Cover the toppings with the remaining half of the cheese. This helps the top tortilla stick.
  6. Finally, take the tortilla that was set aside and place it on top, with the olive oil side facing up.
  7. Turn the stove burner on to low-medium heat.
  8. Using a turner, peak at the bottom of the quesadilla after about a minute and a half. Continue to cook the first side until the tortilla is a golden brown.
  9. Once the bottom has cooked, use the turner to carefully flip the pizza-dilla, to cook the top tortilla. This takes some practice, so you may want to use a plate until you learn the motion.
  10. The second side will cook faster, so check more frequently. Cook until the top tortilla is golden brown. The cheese should be melted through.
  11. Cut it up, and dig in!

This recipe is a spin-off of my classic chicken quesadilla, and I don't keep pizza ingredients on hand all the time. However, this is a great, every-once-in-a-while treat for myself that I can make with leftovers from my camping trips. The calorie count can get pretty high, depending on the ingredients that you use, but one of these is enough for a meal for me.

Let me know if you try this deliciousness. I'd love to hear your feedback!

Stitch Fix #1

I decided to give my myself a treat, since I have been working so hard lately. I've lost quite a bit of weight, and a lot of the clothes in my closet have started falling off of me. I decided that now was the perfect time to give Stitch Fix a try, and I was blown away. I loved every piece that my stylist Gail sent me for my first Fix.

For those of you who don't know about Stitch Fix, it's a clothing service. If you couldn't guess. It is super easy and super fun. All you have to do is answer some questions about your style and your size, and your very own stylist picks out five items just for you. You can even add notes to your stylist to request a certain piece or style. You get to choose the day when your package gets to you, and you get to choose how frequently you'd like to get them. Once your package comes, you can try everything on, send back what you don't like, and keep what you love.

I decided to set my Stitch Fix up to only send me a package when I request it. Getting clothes every month or every other month isn't in my budget right now, especially now that I know what a rockstar my stylist Gail is! But I do love to treat myself every once in a while.

To personalize my Stitch Fix, I added notes to my stylist, and set up a Pinterest board. In my notes, I mentioned that I was looking for clothes that I could transition from the office to everyday. I also mentioned my upcoming vacation to Mexico, and that I would love a piece or two that could be dressed up or down for that.

I could tell as soon as my Fix arrived that I was going to love it. The packaging is super cute. Everything is nicely folded, wrapped in tissue, and put in a little box with a personalized note from your stylist. Inside the envelope there are cards with two outfit ideas for every piece in the box.

The first item in my Fix was this adorable polka dot, fit and flare dress. I tried it on, and it fit me perfectly. It's a great material to be worn either casually or dressed up. It's like and easy to wear, which I love. I was on the fence about keeping this, though. It seems like something that I could have easily found at the mall for a little less money. But, at the end of the day I decided to keep it.

Gilli | Haven Dress | Size: Small | $64

I paired this dress with a blush pink, three quarter sleeve blazer and some yellow heels to add some color, and dress the outfit up for the office. To make it a little more casual, I would wear a pair of flats, a sweater, and a belt.

Next up, was my absolute favorite piece in the box. A navy blue fit and flare dress with a heather grey underlay and cut out details. I could tell before I even put this dress on that it was for me. It is a little bit dressier than the dress above, which makes it perfect for work. I am head over heels for the unique cut outs in this dress. Below, I dressed it up for a night out, but I would also wear this dress everyday. I decided to pair this dress with a white three quarter sleeve cardigan, nude heels, and a metallic bracelet. I knew this dress was a keep before I even tried it on. Although, it fit a little bit bigger in the waist than I would have like.

Skies are Blue | Charisse Dress | Size: Small | $78

Update (3/15/16): I wore this dress for the first time today! I paired it with the same white sweater, and the white sandals pictured in my last Stitch Fix item below. It's not even noon, and I've already gotten five compliments on my outfit. Normally I get maybe one per week. Feels good, man. :)

The next item in my Fix is a staple in every professional's wardrobe. This black, three quarter sleeve blazer can be worn in a different way every day of the week. I love that the trim around the sleeve is black and white. The polka dots are super cute, and they can be mixed with almost any pattern. Below, I am wearing this blazer in a pretty classic way, with a pencil skirt and a neutral colored shirt - although this is a more feminine shirt than you normally see paired with a blazer. This piece is another one that I was on the fence about keeping also. It's something that I could also find for marginally less money in a store, but this was already here! I also already have a black three quarter length sleeve blazer. That being said, I wore it all through my retail days, and it got pretty ratty. I decided to keep this blazer and retire the old one.

Kensie | Rebekah Stretch Crepe Blazer | Size: Small | $88

The fourth piece in the box, was a white, loose, sleeveless top that paired perfectly with the blazer above and a long necklace for a super sleek and modern professional look. Before I tried it on, I though that's all I would have used this top for. Before I tried it on, I thought I would send it back. I love neutrals, so I have a ton of white shirts. Most of mine are just various styles of cotton t-shirts that I dress up or down. This top is such a nice material that just looks richer. I loved this shirt so much after I put it on, that it even makes an appearance in the picture of my last piece as well. No peaking, we'll get there. After trying this on, this was a no brainer - keep! For this picture, I decided to pair this shirt with one of my favorite sweaters and a pair of jeans. This is a great casual outfit, for when I want to look  little nicer.

41Hawthorn | Allyah Sleeveless Shell Blouse | Size: Small | $48

I also loved the back of this shirt. My back is one of my favorite parts of myself, and the dip in the back is just enough to subtly show it off. Perfect for a summer shirt just by itself. I will be getting a whole lot of use out of this top.

The last piece in my first fix was a super fun pencil skirt. This skirt has a bright tribal print, and it will be a perfect option for a nice evening outfit for our vacation to Mexico coming up soon. I also love that I could wear this skirt to work. This piece has so much personality, and it is so bright. The price was very reasonable, and I decided right away to keep this skirt. Below I have paired it with the white top from my fix, above, my blush pink blazer, and a nice long necklace, which would be a perfect way to wear this to work.

Renee C | Melisa Printed Skirt | Size: SP | $48

Taking off the blazer can easily transition this skirt from business to casual. Even though I am wearing this with a white top, I love that this can be worn with almost any bright, summery color. I'd reserve that for those days that I am feeling really adventurous though.

Long story short, after trying on all five of these items, I wanted another box right away! Even I can't find perfect pieces for myself when I am in the mall, so I was amazed at how much I loved everything. This whole experience was so much fun, and I am really looking forward to my next Fix. Since I have mine set to only send me a package when I request one, I am thinking that my next treat will be for my birthday, coming up in May.

Because my stylist knocked this one out of the park, I decided to keep all five items. Keeping everything means that I received a 25% discount. In the end, I decided that it was worth it because that adds up to making the most expensive item in my Fix almost free.
